Abstract:

Seventy-two patients with angina pectoris were divided randomly into the treatment and the control groups. The treatment group had 20 males and 16 females. They were aged 60.20 6.56 years and had had a history of the disease for 5.364.2 years. The control group had 18 males and 18 females. They were aged 59.61 7.26 years and had had a history of the disease for 5.404.40 years. Juhuashuizhi (JHSZ) decoction is prepared from 15 g of dried chrysanthemum flower [Chrysanthemum morifolium], 10 g of Chinese angelica [Angelica sinensis], 10 g of Szechuan lovage rhizome [Ligusticum chuanxiong], 10 g of red peony root [Paeonia lactiflora], 10 g of peach seeds [Prunus persica], 10 g of safflower [Carthamus tinctorius], 10 g of prepared liquorice root [Glycyrrhiza uralensis], 10 g of dried leech [Whitmania pigra], 20 g of Danshen root [Salvia miltiorrhiza], 20 g of milkvetch root [Astragalus membranaceus] and 6 g of scorpion [Mesobuthus martensi]. In the treatment group, patients were administered JHSZ decoction twice a day for four weeks while in the control group, patients were given 10 mg of isosorbide dinitrate three times a day, for four weeks. The total effective rates were 94.4 and 86.1% in the treatment and in the control groups, respectively. JHSZ decoction eliminated angina pectoris, improved the electrocardiogram, and reduced the concentrations of blood sugar and blood fat. It also modulated blood pressure and heart rate. It is concluded that JHSZ decoction is safer, better and more effective than isosorbide dinitrate.
